Oprah Boost’s Twitter Traffic 24%

25 Apr

Many of you have heard by now.  Oprah has jumped on the Twitter bandwagon.  On April 17th, 2009 Oprah tweeted live on her afternoon talk show on @Oprah. Since Oprah is one of the most powerful and followed women in the world, Twitter CEO Evan Williams has to be loving her right about now.  U.S. Twitter traffic increased by 24% according to Hitwise on April 17th, and increased by 43% compared to 7 days prior.

Oprah has gained over a quarter of-a-million followers in merely a week.

Twitter has proved to be a global sweep, not just confined to the United States.  This graphic from Hitwise shows Twitter’s growth on a global scale.

As the graphic shows, Australia now leads the way.  The huge spike in traffic from Australia came after the Queensland elections that took place down under in late March.  News services called the election by the minute using Twitter.  The fact that users are still using the service long after the election shows great promise for the social communication tool.  Will it drop off, we will just have to wait and see.
