Ambient Awareness; O La La
21 Mar
I’m working on a presnetation on ambient awareness. It has been a research area of mine during my years at UW-Stout. Now I’m pulling together data, white papers and other research to present an overall idea and analysis. Do you feel closer to your network because of digital ambient awareness. Does using tools like Facebook, Twiter, Friend Feed etc. lead to more information crossing our networks? Let me know your thoughts by commenting!

Hey Matt!
Not sure how much this will help, but here some thoughts on ambient awareness.
Actually, ambient awareness is not really new. In fact, it’s probably been around as long as people lived in communities and talked with and about each other. So, the random comment made by a person about him/her self, or tidbits overheard in conversations between others, have always cracked open the door to the possibility of conversation. Of course, folks didn’t always use that door, especially if the felt it would be impolite.
Today, however, most of us “get” that information shared in a public timeline is…well… public! In fact, information posted online essentially throws the door wide open, allowing us to engage others. Used well, this can be a great way to connect and build relationships! It is interesting to see news feeds proliferate – even LinkedIn now allows people to interact via comments on status updates and other news items. As a career professional, I think this will dramatically shift how people become known and find work (or have work find them!). I also believe it will have wider social impact as people become more comfortable sharing online!
Hope this helps.
Yes Walter, this helped! I don’t dispute that ambienet awareness is nothing new, just the technologies we are now interacting with amplify the awareness 100-fold.
Maybe another intriguing statement is, should that “door” into our lifestream be so wide open. I suppose this would lead right down a staunch privacy debate.
An exciting time to watch technology unfold!
